How Do You Learn Proper Biblical Interpretation?

Have you ever heard or read something about what is in the Bible and wondered, “Is that really right?” You hear sermons and read books, articles, and the commentaries in your Bible, but sometimes these do not seem right. Additionally, when reading your Bible, you may find it hard to relate it to your life. Studying the Bible takes some time and effort. However, with study, the Bible becomes a living, relevant source of wisdom, guidance, and meaning for your life.  Thereby, to find the truth that sets you free, you must make certain you are receiving the truth, which requires investing in learning how to study the Bible inductively, and finding where to obtain the necessary skills. How do you learn proper Biblical Interpretation?

Am I being told the truth?

While we all know the Bible holds God’s truth and the story of His love and grace towards humankind, we read or hear things that do not seem to be relative without more information.

For example, you hear a sermon on John 21:15-19, where Jesus asks three times if Peter loves Him. The expositor explains the 3 different types of love in the Greek language. However, he/she leaves one with unanswered questions: Why did Jesus ask in the first place? What do Jesus’ answers mean for us today? What did Peter’s answers mean?

Therefore, reading what comes before and after a text is essential to understanding that text in its proper context. Additionally, using dictionaries, commentaries, and original language tools contribute to gaining a correct understanding. Of all the tools available, comparing the Bible against itself is the best tool for accurately understanding the Bible.

Is it worth the effort?

We have tools available to us for understanding the Bible for ourselves; however, it takes time and effort. Is it worth it? Yes! Proper Biblical interpretation assures that you understand God’s love, grace, and the will for one’s life accurately.

Furthermore, studying the Bible brings your faith to all parts of your life, deepening your relationship with Jesus. Personally, not being interested in history, while on a tour of Guanajuato, a person knowledgeable in its rich history explained it in a way that brought the town’s history to life for me.

Likewise, and with more importance, the same holds true for the Bible. Knowing that Jesus’ 3 questions to Peter about his love for Jesus were directly related to Peter’s 3 denials make a huge difference.

Where can I learn how?

Finally, realizing that you need to understand correctly what you hear or read is vital. Additionally, while it is worth studying the Bible inductively, one must also know where to obtain these skills.

In answer, Artios Christian College offers a wide range of courses; however, in this case, the course titled BIS 201 Biblical Interpretation is the solution. Biblical Interpretation is a challenging but fulfilling course, providing continual growth and skills used daily. These skills transform the Bible into God’s living and relevant Word for every aspect of your life.
