{"id":4490,"date":"2018-03-16T09:47:38","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baonline.cog7engage.net\/?p=4490"},"modified":"2023-08-29T11:22:22","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T17:22:22","slug":"a-memorial-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baonline.cog7engage.net\/a-memorial-service\/","title":{"rendered":"A Memorial Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I reflect on the upcoming Lord\u2019s Supper service, I wonder what Jesus was thinking the night of the first Lord\u2019s Supper. How was He feeling, knowing that within a few hours, He would be betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter, abandoned, accused falsely, and crucified by those He came to save?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Luke 22:1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 is recorded how \u201cfervently\u201d Jesus desired to eat that last meal with His disciples. He was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">preparing them for His soon departure. The Last Supper was intimate, simple, and yet so profound! It was more than just a meal and foot washing; it was the last lesson before the greatest test. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Lord\u2019s Supper is a memorial service. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oxford Dictionary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> defines <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">memorial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as \u201cA statue or structure established to remind people of a person or event.\u201d When you think of a memorial service, you usually think of a special service held for someone\u2019s funeral. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus held His own memorial service just a few hours before His death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The foot washing is beautifully recorded in John 13:5: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples\u2019 feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him\u201d (HCSB throughout).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus proceeds to explain the meaning in John 13:14-16. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet. For I have given you an example\u00a0that you also should do just as I have done for you.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master,\u00a0and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The meal is recorded in Luke 22:19, 20:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said,\u00a0\u201cThis is My body,\u00a0which is given for you. Do this in remembrance\u00a0of Me.\u201d<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said,\u00a0\u201cThis cup is the new covenant\u00a0established by My blood;\u00a0it is shed for you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our Great Master humbled Himself, served His friends, and washed their feet as a memorial for them to remember the day that He was betrayed and crucified for the sins of the world. What a lesson! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s take time to read the accounts of the memorial in the Gospels. Let us pause and truly appreciate the great sacrifice Jesus made for us all. As we take the bread, drink the wine, and wash each other\u2019s feet, let us <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">remember<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that night when Jesus did this with His disciples. Let us also seriously consider the sobering warning given by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 to examine ourselves so that we do not take the Lord\u2019s Supper in an unworthy manner. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Corinthians 11:30, 31 says, \u201cThis is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If we were properly evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So as we partake of the Lord\u2019s Supper may we remember, reflect, repent, respect, and rejoice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sonya Orr and her husband, Aaron, live outside Houston, TX, and attend CoG7 \u201cThe Way\u201d in Willis, TX.
