{"id":24479,"date":"2009-12-06T12:14:32","date_gmt":"2009-12-06T19:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baonline.cog7engage.net\/?p=24479"},"modified":"2023-08-29T11:18:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T17:18:58","slug":"does-the-church-of-god-teach-the-rapture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baonline.cog7engage.net\/does-the-church-of-god-teach-the-rapture\/","title":{"rendered":"Does the Church of God teach the rapture?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I have a friend who half believes and half doesn\u2019t believe the rapture theory.\u00a0 He goes by the verse that says we will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air.\u00a0 Please give scripture to prove the Rapture is not true. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your \u201chalf-believing\u201d friend has lots of company, what with a popular book series and movie on the topic. If a <em>Left Behind <\/em>sort of rapture were clearly taught in Scripture, then we\u2019d have something to fully believe.<\/p>\n<p>Christians who are alive when Jesus comes will be <em>caught up <\/em>to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thess. 4:17, your friend\u2019s verse). This suggests that saints will be \u201csnatched away sud\u00addenly\u201d at the Lord\u2019s return and confirms that some sort of rapture is true \u2014 but not the sort usually taught.<\/p>\n<p>Remind your friend that the \u201crapture\u201d of his verse is not silent but is accompanied with \u201ca shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God\u201d (v. 16)! This they don\u2019t tell in <em>Left Behind<\/em>, nor do they say that \u201cevery eye will see Him\u201d (Rev. 1:7). So the Bible\u2019s rapture isn\u2019t secret, either.<\/p>\n<p>The popular theory requires Christ to return, first to rapture the saints to heaven and then again to defeat His enemies, judge the world, and establish his Kingdom. But the Bible never speaks of Jesus coming again and again\u2014three total times. Instead, Hebrews 9:28 lays it down that we may look for Jesus just once more \u2014 \u201ca second time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 13:24-43 offers rebuttal to the common rapture idea: \u201cLet both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, \u2018First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn\u2019 . . . the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels\u201d (vv. 30, 39). Jesus explained that the wheat is taken into the barn <em>after <\/em>the tares are taken for destruction. This reverses the common rapture idea that the righteous are caught away <em>before <\/em>the wicked are judged.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus returns, the Bible says He will stand upon the earth to rule and reign, not just swoop down close and go back to heaven (Job 19:25; Zech. 14:3, 4; Acts 1:9-12; 3:20, 21; Rev. 5:10). God\u2019s saints, whether dead or alive, will rise up, go out to meet Him (1 Thess. 5:13-17), and return with Him in glorious procession, a common practice for conquering heroes in ancient times.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201csecret rapture\u201d was never a teaching of the apostles, the early church, or the reformers. It was first taught among millennialists in nineteenth century England and was popu\u00adlarized through notes in the <em>Schofield Reference Bible<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll all probably be a bit surprised by the actual unfold\u00ading of events at the end of the age.
