Spring Vale “Goes Green” with Energy Team

A team of dedicated, energy-conscious individuals plans to improve energy efficiency and save heating costs for Spring Vale Academy. Initial projects have already lowered costs within the first year.

The school boilers were replaced during school year 2007-08, immediately saving 10-15 percent of the cost of heating the school. The lighting system in the gym has been upgraded with longer lasting bulbs that deliver three times the light at a lower cost. Across campus, most light bulbs were replaced with energy-saving fluorescents.

Materials have arrived on campus for the school building and gym insulation project. Construction will begin as soon as the weather breaks. Future insulation upgrades are also planned for the chapel, dorms, and quad-plex staff housing. These tasks will progress as funding is received.

Future energy projects include:

• quad-plex staff housing: new boiler, two pumps, thermostat (fully funded)
• chapel: hot water system, office light fixtures, heating system, and bathrooms
• outside lighting for the quad seating area and dorms (partially funded)

Endowment Fund Plans

The SVA Endowment Fund Committee is working with financial advisors to ensure that donated monies are properly invested. Stocks currently held in the Endowment Fund continue to increase in value and will mature this year. Capital projects will be funded solely from income received. All principal in the endowment fund will be retained and reinvested to produce income.

The initial goal is to produce $50,000 per year to support capital improvements. The ultimate goal is to produce $250,000 per year. This level of invested funds will allow the school to expand from 50-60 students to around 200. With a relatively small expansion of buildings and staff, this student population goal can be reached. These monies may also help provide funding for needy students who wish to attend Spring Vale.

Work continues on the Virgil Ward Fishing Library. Experienced film professionals are currently reviewing options at this time to make informed decisions on how best to use this asset for Spring Vale Academy.
